On the N7, between Roanne and Tarare, is a very dangerous stretch of road called Les Virages du Pin-Bouchain. I have driven on these "virages" several times. It is a twisty, turny, steep descent into the town of Tarare when coming from Roanne, direction Lyon. The road is dangerous even in good weather.
La Dame Blanche translated means, The Lady in White. There are ghost stories of ladies dressed in white all over France as well as the world. I will tell this tale as it was told to me.
In the 60's and 70's, several people reported to the police that they had picked up a woman hitchhiker dressed all in white. She was relatively young, perhaps in her early twenties. She didn't say much beyond a quiet thank you as she got in the back seat of the vehicles. She didn't talk much during the ride. She would then, without fail, warn the driver to be careful on a particular turn in the road. When the driver would look in his rear view mirror to thank her, she had disappeared.
Apparently this had stopped happening during the late 1970's. But, amid a clutter of utter nonsense on the Internet, I have found believable testimonials that La Dame Blanche is still appearing.
There are many reasons given as to why this young lady would be haunting this particular stretch of road, reaching out, trying to help the living stay alive. My favorite version is the following.
A young married couple left their wedding reception rather late and drove down the Virages du Pin-Bouchain on their way home. They suffered a terrible accident on a dangerous turn in the road and were killed. Since then, La Dame Blanche appears in her bridal gown and helps other to avoid her fate.
Voila! Gros bisous des Dames Blanches et a demain!
Love, Charley
