I'm excited to be co-hosting The Book Chat this week! I'm really interested in this week's topic of re-reading books, since I think we can learn a lot about each other's book preferences and habits.
Do you ever re-read books? Do you return to your favourites time and time again? For the most part, I don't and I have a shelf full of "favourites" that I always tell myself need to be read again. However, there are a couple exceptions to my aversion of re-reading (and pretty big ones at that).
I've re-read the Harry Potter series a few times. Basically, whenever the newest book was to be released, I'd read all of the previous ones again. I always find something new in those books, especially after having read the newest in the series, and I'm thinking of setting aside time this summer to read the entire series again without any breaks inbetween. A summer full of Potter sounds wonderful, actually. :)
Another book that I re-read is Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I first read it in my senior year of high school and since then, I have read it again once a year. Wicked is my all-time favourite book (I'm always scared to choose a favourite, but there is no denying my love for this book) and I adore everything about Elphaba and her story. As I grow, my understanding of the story changes. Maguire's book is a complex one that has a different meaning for me every single time I read it.
As for all those other favourite sitting on a shelf? I keep wanting to choose a year and only read my favourites, so that I'm guaranteed to have a year full of wonderful reading. But what if they have lost their magic? It's a scary thought, to have a favourite not live up to the hype you've given it for years.
