Character Study: Pacey Witter

I used to be a Dawson Leery fan. My first real ship (where I was completely invested in the love life of two fictional characters) was Dawson Leery and Joey Potter. I used to be infuriated by Joey's wavering attention because I could never understand why she was interested in Pacey Witter. In case anyone ever needed proof that I've grown up, it's evident in my ever-changing opinion of Dawson's Creek characters.

I am now proud to admit that I'm a Pacey Witter fan. After countless re-watches of Dawson's Creek, it's obvious that his story is much more complex than the title character's. Pacey's character arc is the classic story of the underdog. He has next to no support from family or friends in the early seasons of the show. When he begins to fall in love with Joey Potter, his love for her is so genuine and necessary - she really does bring out the best of him.

Pacey never does make good decisions. Episode after episode, his actions are questionable at best. However, he picks himself up and turns things around every single time. Pacey's perseverance is admirable and he's the perfect example of the fact that pursuing your dreams and working hard really does pay off in the end.
