Character Study: Pacey Witter

Penulis : Unknown on Thursday, 14 November 2013 | 04:00

Thursday, 14 November 2013

I used to be a Dawson Leery fan. My first real ship (where I was completely invested in the love life of two fictional characters) was Dawson Leery and Joey Potter. I used to be infuriated by Joey's wavering attention because I could never understand why she was interested in Pacey Witter. In case anyone ever needed proof that I've grown up, it's evident in my ever-changing opinion of Dawson's Creek characters.

I am now proud to admit that I'm a Pacey Witter fan. After countless re-watches of Dawson's Creek, it's obvious that his story is much more complex than the title character's. Pacey's character arc is the classic story of the underdog. He has next to no support from family or friends in the early seasons of the show. When he begins to fall in love with Joey Potter, his love for her is so genuine and necessary - she really does bring out the best of him.

Pacey never does make good decisions. Episode after episode, his actions are questionable at best. However, he picks himself up and turns things around every single time. Pacey's perseverance is admirable and he's the perfect example of the fact that pursuing your dreams and working hard really does pay off in the end.

Character Study: Liz Lemon | I Believe in Story

Oh, Liz Lemon. She has somehow, not so elegantly, become the face of all women everywhere who can’t get their shit together. She’s unashamedly nerdy, smart, and logical. She’s consistently the victim of bad habits and relies way too much on a relationship with her boss. You can’t quite call her a role model, but there’s something irresistibly charming about her chaotic life.

Who doesn’t want to ignore what people say about them and live the life they've always dreamed of? Who cares if eating Pop-Tarts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is a bad idea? Why shouldn’t we brush off the societal expectation of being a hot soccer mom? Who says we can’t have a fulfilling life without a romantic partner?

Watching Liz Lemon stumble through life is all the reassurance we need for our own mistakes. We all have guilty pleasures, but Liz’s character teaches us that we need to embrace whatever it is that makes us unique – despite what everyone else might say.

Liz doesn’t apologize for anything. She does things her way because she knows it’s what’s right for her. We should all be so lucky to have that type of self-assurance, to know exactly who we are and not apologize for it. So, be a little more like Liz Lemon. Decide what you want and go get it. Act a little weird. Make up words. Make no apologies for living the life you were meant to live.

Character Study: Buffy Summers | I Believe in Story

I finished a re-watch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer this week and Buffy Summer's character impressed me more than ever before. I've been a Buffy fan for as long as I can remember, but I never did love Buffy all that much. It's not that I've ever disliked her, but she never stood out for me among the other personalities (Willow, Giles, and Spike are definitely my favourite characters).

I saw the progression in Buffy's character this time around. Watching the series in a short amount of time allowed me to see character development happen quickly, rather than the typical slow change. I can still clearly remember the Buffy of Season 1, and yet the Buffy of Season 7 is so much wiser and stronger.

Buffy saves the world. She doesn't necessarily want to, but she takes her calling seriously and does everything she can for those she loves and those she doesn't know. She has obvious physical strength, but she's also emotionally strong. She endures heartbreak and grief, failed friendships, real-life struggles - the things every woman or man goes through in his/her life - and so much more.

There are times when Buffy is an open book and other times when she's completely closed off from the world. You can watch half of a season without knowing what she is thinking. Still, Buffy Summers is an inspiration. You'd be silly to not aspire to her amount of strength and love and wisdom.

She accepts her calling as the vampire slayer and makes it work. It's not a title she wants - and it causes her more problems in life than helps her out - but she does it because she has to. She's the chosen one because she's strong enough to handle it. Buffy represents women everywhere. Joss Whedon writes her character in a way that moves her beyond the world of vampires and demons. The weight of the world is placed on her shoulders in the same way that people everywhere, every day, deal with the stress and struggle of daily life.

"There's only one thing I've ever been sure of. You." - Spike, talking about Buffy's strength

Character Study: Barney Stinson

Character Study: Barney Stinson | I Believe in Story

"Suit up!" I think Barney Stinson is a very complex character. This has a lot to do with an analysis I did on the character back in my undergraduate studies and I'll preface this post by saying my love for How I Met Your Mother has deteriorated lately. A lot of what I initially loved about the show has gone away, so I'm stuck in a space of wanting to like the show, but disliking most of the time I spend watching it now.

Barney Stinson is sort of like that to begin with. His womanizing ways are glamourized by the show and I find this problematic. I have no choice but to ask myself: Why are so many viewers (including myself) accepting of and entertained by Barney Stinson's obviously flawed personality?

Barney is a womanizer and an extreme example of a sex-driven male bachelor, but he is also attributed with traditional "female habits," such as getting pedicures and being picky about the clothes that he wears. Barney’s promiscuity is often the source of humour on the show, but this view of sexual activity can be seen as an antithesis to Lily and Marshall’s fidelity. While Barney is anything but a role model, his actions are foiled by better morals from other characters (and sometimes even better intentions from himself).

Many viewers are able to look past Barney's negative characteristics because every once in awhile there are signs of “something deeper” to his character. Stories about Barney’s past make viewers feel sympathetic and provide an explanation to his treatment of women (although, it's up to you whether those explanations are valid excuses). For example, in “Game Night” Barney tells the story of how he became a suit-wearing womanizer. It is revealed that he was dumped by the woman he loved for a businessman in a suit. This influenced his own ideas about masculinity and caused Barney to drastically change his lifestyle.

I'd love to know your opinion. What do you like or dislike about Barney Stinson? Are you offended by his character? Do you appreciate the humour his character brings to the show?

Character Study: Ross Geller

Character Study: Ross Geller | I Believe in Story

Ross Geller is my favourite of the six main characters on Friends. He's a little kid at heart. He took a passion shared by many young children (dinosaurs!) and turned it into a career. He exudes intelligence simply because he can call himself a doctor. Yet placed in any situation that doesn't involve rambling about historical facts, Ross turns to panic.

He has subtle sarcastic humour (he's not as over-the-top as Chandler) that always makes me laugh. He may not be the comedic relief of the show (Joey), but his intelligent jokes are the ones that bring me back to Friends time and time again.

The character has been through so many difficult situations, even if the show does take them lightly, and Ross continuously strives to be better. (You can only fail at marriage so many times, right?) He's always trying to make the people around him happy. He cares for his sister, he's always there for his friends, he tries to be the best father possible, and his love for Rachel is a romance that will last through generations.

He may not seem like a strong character compared to the other dominating personalities on the show, but I think we all have a lot to learn from Ross Geller. Be smart. Follow your dreams. Never give up. Love the best that you can.
