Book Hangovers

Another Thursday, another BOOK CHAT. This week's topic: Book Hangovers.

What is a book hangover? The inability to start a new book because you're still living in the last book's world.

The concept of a book hangover has been brought up a lot lately in the book blogging world. I had never considered this a common affliction, but I can see a strange pattern when I look back at my list of books read (yes, I keep a list). After I read a book I really, really love (conveniently highlighted on my list), it's always a few books later that I come across another one I adore. I think some books are so good that they make it difficult for other books to reach their level of awesome.

The two books I can think of that fit into this category (probably because I read them last year so their effects are still fresh in my mind - I'm sure there have been others ones) are The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

I had been losing my faith in books before I picked up The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. It had been a long time since I read something I truly loved and this book reaffirmed my love for literature and gave me faith that there were still more compelling reads out there for me to discover. Needless to say, most of the books I read after finishing Chabon's story did not live up to its magnificence.

The Night Circus is absolutely perfect magical realism (my favourite genre) and the book swept me away. I still don't think I'm quite over it - and I'm craving another great magical realism novel.
