Le Chateau de la Roche du Roi is located in Aix Les Bains. On our way out of the aforementioned town yesterday afternoon, looking up to my left, I spotted the most intriguing castle and brought my Renault Twingo to a screeching halt. Gazing at it from the road at the bottom of a steep mountainside, I knew that I had to get closer. Despite the grumblings issuing from my children's mouths (Mom, we just want to go home now!), I was convinced I would find a road to take me up the mountain.
A half an hour later, there we were, smack in front of the hauntingly beautiful Chateau de la Roche du Roi (Castle of the king's rock). It was all fenced off with do not trespass signs everywhere. My children encouraged me to crawl through a hole in the fence and get close up for photos and to really see what it was all about.
The castle was built during the Belle Epoque period in France. It is currently for sale by the latest owner who is shamelessly letting it fall to pieces and I mean literally pieces! Chunks are falling off the roof, the floors looked terribly dangerous, I didn't dare step inside the place. I kept thinking, 'Someone needs to save this place! Isn't there a movie star somewhere with 5 million extra euros lying around? (1 million purchase price, estimated 4 million in reparation.) Aix Les Bains is a mere 40 minutes from the Lyon international airport!! Someone has to repair le chateau de la roche du roi!!'
