It's not often that I get to see a play, let alone a touring Broadway show. I have a soft spot for musicals. No matter how cheesy and ridiculous, I absolutely adore them. One of my Christmas presents this year was to see Billy Elliot. As upset as I am about not living in New York City, I am thankful that Ottawa occasionally hosts Broadway plays at the National Arts Centre. I was ecstatic about the tickets. I didn't know much about the play other than Billy was a little kid who wanted to be a ballet dancer. We went to the play last week and it was absolutely wonderful.
The music was incredible. Although, I had no doubt in my mind that it would be, since Elton John is the genius behind it. The dancing was phenomenal. I've never been a big fan of dance (I usually stare at a dance routine in confusion and shake my head simply because I don't *get* it), but I was so impressed by the young boy's talent.
"Angry Dance" was the highlight of the show for me (which happens at the end of Act 1). Everything about the performance blew me away. As I was sitting in the theatre, I couldn't believe that I felt inspired by a dance. For the first time in my life, I *got* the art form. I think after seeing Billy Elliot, I will move forward appreciating dance a hell of a lot more.
Best of all, the play had an amazing story. I can always use a new reminder to never give up on my dreams, to accept who I am, to embrace my individuality. Billy Elliot does all of this is in a heartfelt, humorous way (the adult comedy in the show took me by surprise). If you ever get the chance, I recommend seeing the live show.
