Character Study: Dexter Morgan | I Believe in Story

Career man. Loving father. Serial killer. No other fictional character has captured my attention more in recent years than Dexter Morgan. The original book by Jeff Lindsay is great, but Michael C. Hall brings the character to life so much better than I ever could have imagined. I'd go so far as to say Dexter Morgan is the greatest fictional character of our generation (perhaps tied with Don Draper). You can't help but absolutely love him even though he, well, murders people in his spare time.

Dexter sort of breaks all the rules of a typical serial killer. See, he actually does have feelings even if he tries to deny them. He (sort of) falls in love and he cares about his family. He'll do anything necessary to protect Harrison (the adorable boy in the top right corner) and swears by his "code" when it comes down to committing murder. Following the advice of his father, Dexter is really just another messed up boy like the rest of us. Right?

The show provides an interesting experience for the viewer. After all, we're taught to decipher good from evil, put our faith in the right people, expect for the good side to always win. And yet, Dexter Morgan is on our side, the good side, as he goes around killing people for... what? Revenge? Fun? An internal need? We don't really know and neither does he. One of my favourite things about Dexter Morgan is that he constantly questions himself. He lives life by a code, pays close attention to every move he makes (he sort of has to in order to stay out of prison), and yet he still makes mistakes.

Dexter Morgan may be a killer, but he's one of the most human fictional characters you can find.
