Character Study: Blaine Anderson | I Believe in Story

Glee probably isn't the first show that comes to mind when you think of "quality" television. However, there's no denying that the show's creator, Ryan Murphy, has a long list of successful shows: Popular, Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, and The New Normal are all part of his résumé. While Glee is often criticized for its inclusion of too many characters, there are a few that stand out amongst the crowd.

Blaine Anderson, only introduced to the series in the middle of season two, has quickly become a focal point of the series. Glee typically treats their characters with tremendous satire, playing off of everyday stereotypes to exaggerate the labels we put on one another. However, Blaine's character has a depth that most of the other characters lack. His history is never dealt with upfront, but there are enough hints in passing remarks about past tragedies that suggest Ryan Murphy certainly has something profound in mind for the character.

Some of the success of Blaine's character needs to be attributed to Darren Criss' talents -- both as an actor and a performer. Criss plays his part with such devotion that he has truly brought Ryan Murphy's character to life. Blaine Anderson seems to exist off of the page (and the screen).

With some of the recent decisions made by Blaine on the show, his history seems even more important than ever. I can't help but wonder what Murphy has up his sleeve for the future of this character.
